Wine-Red, Cinnamon & Garnet. Bernice's Legacy

The colors of this iris are my favorite. In Greek mythology, Iris is the goddess of the rainbow. Irises do seem to come in every color thus making her a perfect namesake.

While researching this color, I found a letter from the granddaughter of Bernice Miller, the original hybridizer.

"Her garden has fallen into disrepair and I am trying to locate all the hybrids," Gerie writes. Her grandmother developed the beautiful flower which now graces my back yard.

I was given my iris bulbs by the mother of a dear friend. I had painted watercolors of these iris' ancestors on several occasions. When she dug up her garden to replant and separate them for thinning she thought of me. Now they are growing in my back yard, three blocks away.

What a legacy these mothers and grandmothers share with us all, populating gardens with beauty.
